On 12 November 1787 in Falmouth, Cornwall,
England John Gundry married Elizabeth Doubt and together they had four children. At the moment that is the only details of John and Elizabeth. John might have been born in the Cornwall area.
Their children were: John (b. 3 October 1788 Falmouth), Henry (b. 12 September 1790 Falmouth), William (25 January 1795 Falmouth) and finally my ancestor, Thomas.
Thomas was born on 23 August 1792 in Falmouth. He worked as a butcher. On 12 February 1821 in Falmouth Thomas married Mary Ann Snow and had two children: Mary Ann (b. 2 May 1821 Falmouth) and Thomas Snow (b. 22 October 1823 Falmouth and d. 14 May 1826 Falmouth). Mary died on 3 August 1831 leaving behind her surviving daughter and husband. Thomas looks to have had an affair with a woman called Honor (b. 1785 Cornwall d. 1848) as he has a daughter by her called Jane (b. 1825 Cornwall). Finally Thomas married a woman called Eliza (her last name is unknown but she was born around Wallingford, Berkshire).
Thomas and Eliza’s two children were: William (b. 1846 Clerkenwell, Middlesex) who looks to have died young and Thomas Henry.
Thomas Henry was born in 1845 Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England. He started working as a greengrocer but by 1871 was a Police Constable. In 1866 at St Giles, Middlesex Thomas Henry married Louisa Lucy Cooper. In their fifteen year marriage they had nine children: Henry William (b. 1867 Poplar), Eliza Eleanor (b. 1871 Poplar), Albert Edward (b. 1878 Bromley), Madeline Rose Esther (b.1881 Bromley), Thomas Alfred (b. 1871 Poplar), Frederick Norman (b. 1874 Poplar d. 1876 Poplar), Robert George (b. 1874 Poplar), Louisa Kathleen (b. 1876 Poplar) and my great grandfather Louis Oliver. At the age of 37 in 1881 Poplar, London Thomas Henry was killed in action.
Louis Oliver was born on 24 February 1869 in Poplar. He came to Australia under the name Louis Oliver Mitchell as that was the last name of his stepfather. It wasn’t until his mother wrote to him from England to tell him he was a Gundry that he started using his correct name. Louis also worked as a boil maker, which was his stepfather’s profession. In 1898 in Sydney, Louis married Louisa Isabella Wran and together they had ten children. Louis passed away in 1944 in Balmain, NSW.
Louis and Louisa’s children were: Eleanor Maude (b.1901 Balmain), Joseph Albert (b. 1904 Balmain), Louis Oliver (b. 1898 Balmain), Thomas Harry (b. 1899 Balmain), Louisa Lucy (b. 1907 Balmain), Susan L (b.1911 Balmain), Clarice Kathleen (b. 1913 Balmain), George Walton (b. 1915 Balmain), Frederick Robert (b.1917 Balmain) and my grandmother, Lillian May Gundry.
Lillian May was born on 28 may 1909 in Balmain. She married my grandfather George Henry Stuart on 28th January 1928 in St John’s Church, Birchgrove, Balmain. Lillian passed away on the 5th of September 2006 in Canberra Hospital. She is missed by all her children and grandchildren. (See Stuart page for Lillian and George’s children.)
In about 1923 my grandfather Louis Oliver Gundry received a letter from a solicitor in England stating that there was fortune of gold in the Bank of England which belonged to Ashley-Cooper and due to the Great Fire of London burning all the records they didn't know who the heirs were. The solicitors traced the heirs of the fortune to the Gundrys, only they weren’t sure which Gundry so they sent letters to all the Gundrys in the world (at the time there were only a few) asking that they return to England and bring proof that they were related to Ashley-Cooper. My grandfather never returned, believing it to be a wild goose chase. The gold was never claimed by the rightful heirs and it went into consolidated revenue and was no more.
I have been trying to find information on this case so if anyone has any or knows how to search for some then please let me know!
